Achieving high level of nutrient removal has been traditionally associated with higher liquid side energy consumption in wastewater treatment plants. However through a combination of dewatering sidestream nutrient management technologies, main stream flow nitritation, enhanced volatile solids degradation and high value biogas utilization, the energy balance of WWTPs can be enhanced to the point of achieving energy neutrality along with high level of nutrient removal. The ability to rapidly assess the impact of such process changes using combined of energy and mass balance tools will be demonstrated.

Dr. Dimitri Katehis,  Greeley and Hansen’s Director of Process Engineering,  has two decades experience in nutrient removal and recovery.  Initially focused on sidestream nutrient recovery and high rate main stream nitrogen removal processes in the early 1990’s, he led the development of sidestream bioaugmentation and nitritation processes in NYC and DCWater utilizing the fundamentals developed from his doctoral work.  For the past 13 years he has been focused on implementation of innovative nutrient control solutions ranging from deammonification reactors in Philadelphia, New York and Tuscon, to integrated MBR/BioActiflo process trains in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.  His work has been presented in national and international conferences and he is the author of book chapters in the WEF/ASCE MOP-8 among other publications.

He holds a Bachelors of Engineering (magna cum laude) and a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering from the City College of New York, and a Doctorate in Philosophy from the City University of New York.
